Berkeley Lab was founded in 1931 by Ernest Orlando Lawrence, a UC Berkeley physicist who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for his invention of the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics.
It was Lawrence’s belief that scientific research is best done through teams of individuals with different fields of expertise, working together. His teamwork concept is a Berkeley Lab legacy that continues today.

Perantau Indonesia "Penakluk" Benua Amerika
Dr. Sehat Sutardja, M.Sc. is the president, chief executive officer, chairman, and co-founder of Marvell Technology Group. Beliau merupakan pria kelahiran Indonesia lulus dari Sekolah Canisius, Sebuah SMA di Jakarta pada tahun 1980.
Kemudian beliau merantau dan belajar ke Amerika Serikat dan mendapatkan gelar sarjana pada bidang teknik kelistrikan dari Iowa State University. He also holds a Master of Science and Doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Sutardja has been awarded more than 260 patents and is a fellow of IEEE. In 2004, Sutardja along with fellow Marvell co-founders Ms. Weili Dai and Dr. Pantas Sutardja received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in the networking and communications category.
In March 2009, a building at UC Berkeley was named Sutardja Dai Hall after the Marvell founders, who donated more than 20 million U.S. dollars to the university's nano-fabrication laboratory; the building houses the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). In 2012, Dr. Sutardja was awarded the Indonesian Diaspora Lifetime Achievement Award for Global Pioneering and Innovation at the first-ever Congress of Indonesian Diaspora, presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.
